Making homemade custard powder is so easy.
With ingredients readily
available in the larder: Cornflour, vanilla sugar (or just add vanilla essence
when making the sauce) and yellow food colouring, you will have a readily
available custard powder.
What is Custard Powder?
Custard powder once cook with milk, sugar and a dash of vanilla essence, you will have a creamy, luscious, eggless, custard sauce to pour over apple pie, pudding, fruit custard and other dessert.And it is so delicious!
What Custard Powder made of?
I am sure everyone has heard Bird's Custard Powder!Did anyone ever noticed what's written in the ingredient section?
Yes, I happened to read the ingredients at the back of any custard powder packaging.
To my horror, custard powder is made of very simple ingredients, ingredients that we already have in our larder!
Cornflour or cornstarch is main ingredients with a smidgen of yellow food colouring called Annato.
Cornflour or corn starch not to be mix with corn meal ya :P
Some manufacturer may add salt but most do not.
How to Make Custard Powder at home?
Printable recipe can be found at the end of this post.However, I have some photos to help us to visualize how easy it is to make custard powder at home.
1. Mix cornflour with vanilla sugar
2. Add powdered yellow food colouring.
To make custard sauce, add them to cold milk and stir.
3. Bring milk to boil, add sugar and the custard-milk mixture.
4. Once custard sauce is ready, transfer to a heatproof container and cover with cling film.
Is this Custard Powder Gluten Free?
Yes it is gluten free custard powder.Main ingredient is corn flour.
Vegan Custard Powder
I have made this recipe as vegan custard powder too.No milk powder added to the base custard powder.
When making vegan custard sauce, add other milk substitute like soy milk, oats milk, almond milk or rice milk.
I would recommend using rice milk as rice milk has no after taste, unlike soy milk or almond milk.
Making eggless custard is a breeze.

I have a corn allergy. Would tapioca starch or arrowroot work okay in this?

DeleteI am sorry to hear about your allergy.
Once heat up, tapioca starch will be thick and gooey unlike corn flour (will give that smooth and silky texture).

DeleteIn Malaysia and Australia, we refer cornstarch as corn flour.
The white flour that usually used as thickener.
