What is Curry Powder?

Curry powder is a spice mix, found some 4000 years ago (according to wiki) in the Indian sub-continent.

Curry powder is a mix of ground spices like turmeric, coriander, cumin, chilli powder, black peppercorns, mustard seeds.

The warm wonderful colour of the spices gives a robust flavour to any curry, soups or stews.

Fresh ingredients like ginger and garlic, will be added when I plan to cook curry for the day.

What is the difference between curry powder and garam masala?

The first thing that you will notice is the colour difference between curry powder and garam masala.
From the colour difference, one can tell that the amount of spices and the quantity used differs.

Secondly is the taste!
Do a taste test on both (I used to do this when I was young, tasted every single spice in my mom's little spice cabinet. I even tasted msg...not very pleasant taste, I can tell ya!)

Curry powder has a mild taste while garam masala has a strong pungent taste.

Thirdly, the quantity used in each recipe!
You will require perhaps a couple of tablespoons of curry powder to cook a good curry.
While garam masala, a little quantity goes a long way.

How to do Make Curry Powder from Scratch?

I give credit to my daughter, for this medley spices mix that we now call our homemade curry powder!
For a person who doesn't like curry that much, but she cooked a 'mean' curry sauce to go with our fish and chips!

This is how she makes her homemade curry powder!

Do take note that I have printable recipe card below, listing down the amount and spices used plus step by step method.

1) Pan roast seed spices like coriander, cumin, fennel.
Pan roast the spices create a more depth in flavour and robustness to the curry!

2) Blend or grind the spices

3) Mix well. Keep them in an airtight jar

How do I keep this curry powder mix?

As most spices, it is best to keep them in an airtight jar, in a dark cool places in your pantry.

How long can I keep this curry powder mix?

Best keep it for 3 to 6 months.
This recipe yield about 1/2 to 3/4 cup, and I uses at least 3 tablespoon of this curry powder mix every time I cook, so I will be making them more often before the spices loose its 'freshness' over time.
