Lemang or glutinous rice rolled in banana leaves are one of many delicacies, enjoyed by many Malaysians especially during Eid celebration.
I first introduce Lemang in 2011. I wrote a lengthy post about how Eid is celebrated in Malaysia. Hop over to Rosa's Yummy Yums blog to read.
In previous post, glutinous rice was cooked in rice cooker prior. This time, glutinous rice was cooked using microwave. Do read the instruction as well as note below.
This is a cheat way of making lemang, not as authentic... as in filling up the bamboo cavity with glutinous rice, add coconut milk, cook over open flame for hours :(.
The purpose of bamboo is to hold its cylindrical shape, without it, we still get Lemang as long as banana leaves is used.
This quick fix aka cheat way is a saviour... when craving kicks-in, to bite into that rich creamy bite of lemang ... be it during Eid or just any other ordinary day.

Cheat Lemang/ Glutinous Rice rolled
Ingredients

400g glutinous rice
400ml coconut milk
salt to taste
2 pandan leaves - knotted
- Wash and soak glutinous rice overnight
- next day : drain off water using a strainer
- Use a sizeable heat-proof bowl, add coconut milk to glutinous rice.
- Add salt
- Stir
- Add knotted pandan
- Cook in microwave on HIGH, uncover for 7 1/2 minutes.
- Stir and fluff every 1 1/2 minutes.
- After 7 1/2 minutes, take out from microwave, fluff and cover with cling film (leaving a small ventilation gap), place the bowl back into microwave and cook for further 2 1/2 minutes.
- Fluff again, cover and leave it to rest for 5 minutes.
- Spoon the cooked rice onto washed and pat dry banana leaves.
- Roll and tie both end with strings.
- Place under griller / broiler to char the leaves. Charred banana leaves will release its natural oil and flavour the glutinous rice.
- leave to cool completely before slicing
- Best serve with Rendang.
Note :
- Total cooking time in this recipe is 10 minutes (do take note as microwave cooking time and heat varies)
- I bought frozen banana leaves from Asian Grocer. If you happen to have fresh banana leaves, its best to wash, pat dry and heat the banana leaves over open fire, This is to release its natural oil and banana leaves will be more manageable to roll (without breaking into shreds)
